SCHOOL
PROFILE
May Day Elementary
School was built by the Moravian Church and opened in 1894 near Georges Valley
in Manchester. In the early 1950’s when the building became dilapidated, the
said Moravian Church obtained 5 acres of land from Gerald Gibson and built the
New May Day Senior School.
Situated in the
periphery of the May Day Mountain and 3 miles South-east of Mandeville the
capital of the parish, the school was officially opened on June 24, 1954.
Since that time,
there has been numerous transitions ; Senior School to All-Age School,
Experimental Primary (1974), All Age and Secondary to Primary, Junior High and
Secondary (1975), Comprehensive High School (1998) and High School (2000). The
programmes May Day High School engages in are in line with those offered in
similar Secondary Schools.
A new
block of classrooms, refurbishing of 3 existing blocks to facilitate the
administrative offices, classrooms, library and three workshops: Carpentry,
Food & Nutrition and Clothing and Textile was done as part of the upgrading
process. A new Chemistry/Biology Laboratory and was constructed by the Urban
Development Corporation (UDC). During that period, the Ministry of Education,
Youth and Culture gave the school the opportunity to carry out refurbishing
work on those buildings the UDC contract would not address.
School resources, facilities and culture
The first floor of a
block was completed (8 classrooms and a computer laboratory), toilet transformed
into modern sanitary convenience, 4 showers, 10 water closets and they were all
painted. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture awarded an additional sum
of money that was used to refurbish the Home Economics Department, part furnish
the computer laboratory and do general repairs.
Additional furniture for staff and students were given to the
school. In 1999, the Parent Teachers’
Association (PTA) spearheaded the construction of a block housing 6 classrooms,
now complete and fully utilized.
As an upgraded high
school May Day has made great strides and the students are now rated amongst
the best. This school have performed creditably in the core areas of
Mathematics, English A and Biology at the CSEC level and have also performed
extremely well in the other subject areas.
May Day High school have come a long way and have been up to the top 5
in CSEC English A and the top 15 in CSEC Mathematics recently in the category
of upgraded schools.
