Headers, Footers, Margins and Tabs

Headers and Footers

Headers and footers refer to text used to identify pages of your document. They may appear at the top of the document (header) or at the bottom of the document (footer) of every page of document. Common Headers and Footers are page numbers, document titles, notices to turn over the page, dates etc.

 If you place them in a header or footer outside of the document body, you can rest assured that this information will always retain the correct placement, no matter how much you edit the content of your document.  Microsoft Word includes a considerable amount of advanced options for working with headers and footers; you can insert AutoText entries such as file name and path, dates, and page numbers that will automatically update as your document changes. Additionally, you can specify that the first page and/or odd pages have different headers and/or footers; once you  understand how they work and how to manipulate the options by taking advantage of section breaks, you can even give every single page a different header and footer.

Margins and Tabs

Margin is the amount of white space that appears at the top, bottom, left, and right edges of your document, or the blank space around the  edges of the page. In general, you insert text and graphics in the printable area inside the margins, while Tab are primarily used to indent the first  line of a paragraph or to line up columns of text or numbers. The default tab key takes the cursor 0.5 inches from the left margin and between columns. The space may be widened by pressing the tab key more than once (twice to get 1 inch ect.) However this method does not make alignment very accurate and sometimes the space bar has to used to give a line an additional space to match the others.

1. How to set Margins;
 a. Go to Page layout on the Menu bar
 b. Go to Margin and select the required Margin for your document.
 c. Or go to customize the margin for the page.

 2. How to set the default Tab;
a. On the Page Layout tab, go to the Paragraph section
b. Place the cursor where you want to indent / tab.
c. Change the indent setting ; right and left.

When you press the TAB key, your tab will stop across the page at the distance that you specified.
